After years of being on the road and working from hotels and client sites, I basically have a love/hate relationship with technology.
I’m one of those people who has everything setup “just right” in my home office. I have desktop shortcuts to all my frequently used apps. My electronic and paper folders are all organized – well at least they are right where I expect them to be. My 3 line office phone has frequently dialed numbers programmed. My cell phone is handy for easy texting and calls. I have multiple apps up at the same time and just switch between them as I need to.
Not so easy to replicate when you are on the road. Laptop vs desktop (ok, I know there’s an option to merge but I’m stuck with old habits), wireless connections falter, files aren’t so handy; “follow me roaming” forgets to actually follow me, etc.
But this week I’ve had the best “working on the road” experience ever! My husband and I are visiting in Bogota, Colombia. We’re here for a wedding and for some family gatherings. Meanwhile, I have several client commitments for calls and work products, and so does Ricardo. So we’ve set up a mini office in our hotel suite and have been doing our work during the days and hanging out with family in the evenings. No cell phone – those international rates are nuts – but Skype has been performing like a champ. No texting, but emails have been flowing between my various accounts. Wireless internet has been great. Facebook has kept me in touch with family and friends at home.
I’ve learned a little something about myself this week. I don’t necessarily need all the gadgets I think I need to get the job done. I’ve also realized that I frequently do not fully utilize the capabilities of some of the tools I do have. I get into a rut, only using parts of programs or tools (like my tablet/laptop combo) because I jump in with an immediate need and then don’t bother learning the full capabilities. This week I’ve actually taken time to learn about features I didn’t realize I have access to. This week, technology has really been my friend.
This experience has made me wonder – what other parts of my business might be waiting for revitalization. If I’ve fallen into the trap of only using pieces and parts of some tools, perhaps the same might be true in other areas. I think a little late summer tune-up of processes and tools might be just the thing when I get back to the office.
It’s good to take a little time every so often to take a look at what you are doing on a daily basis and check to see if you are staying aligned with your strengths and using tools and processes that fully support you.
